The five candidates for the 2013 BBC African Footballer of the Year award have been revealed on the BBC’s Newsday programme.

Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure has made the shortlist for the fifth consecutive year and is joined by Nigerians Victor Moses and John Mikel Obi, Burkina Faso’s Jonathan Pitroipa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon.

None of this year’s shortlist, which was voted for by 44 journalists across Africa, has won the BBC award before and two of the players – Pitroipa and Aubameyang – are the first nominees from their respective countries.

Aubameyang has been in prolific form over the past year – ending the 2012/13 season with 19 goals for Saint-Etienne, a tally which placed him second in the list of top scorers in the French Ligue 1, and he also helped them win the French Cup to claim his first trophy as a professional.

His performances rewarded him with a summer transfer to this year’s Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund and he has already hit seven goals in 11 games for the Germans.

For Pitroipa, his biggest highlights came on the international stage as the winger excelled in the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and was named player of the tournament, helping Burkina Faso to shock everyone and reach the final.

The Stade Rennais man has continued to shine for his country, hitting three goals in World Cup qualification as the Burkinabe aim to reach Brazil by completing a play-off victory over Algeria, having won the first leg 3-2.

Two players on the list fared even better in this year’s Nations Cup; Mikel and Moses were both heavily involved as Nigeria lifted the trophy for the first time for 19 years.

Mikel also won silverware with his club Chelsea in the form of the Europa League – and on a personal note 2013 was the year when he finally struck a goal for the Blues, coming in his 185th game.

Goals have flowed more readily for Moses, the winger hit six for Chelsea in 2013 before he moved on a season-long loan to Liverpool, where he scored on his debut in September.

Yet the most potent of the three English Premier League based-players on the list is midfielder Toure. The Ivorian has bagged 12 goals so far in 2013 – including some exquisite free-kicks.

Although he and his Manchester City team-mates were unable to retain their league title last season, Toure was still a force to be reckoned with in the centre of the park – commanding, creative and he was increasingly clinical in front of goal.

They know the local stuff, so they can say things that we don’t know about. They have the upper hand on us, but all the same, we’re super funny, and you’re going to find out! We’re going to get along with them and work as a team.”

The show, which is just a couple of hours away, will be hit hard by the comedians and scheduled musical acts and Tony & Deeray came 2 days early just to get ready for the big event.

Argo wins top Screen Actors Guild award

Screen Actors Guild award

Argo was honoured this weekend by two of the Hollywood guilds

Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage drama Argo has won the top honour for overall cast performance at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

Jennifer Lawrence took the best actress award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, while Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for Lincoln.

Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Hathaway won the supporting actor awards for Lincoln and Les Miserables respectively.

ITV’s Downton Abbey also picked up a prize for best TV drama series cast.

Argo beat Les Miserables, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook to win the top award.

“This has nothing to do with me,” said Affleck, who both directed and starred in Argo.

“It has to do with the incredible people who were in this movie.”

The prize came a day after Argo won the top honour at the Producers Guild Awards, the winner of whose best film prize often goes on to win best picture at the Oscars.

Affleck’s film tells the fact-based story of how US diplomats stranded in Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution were spirited out of the country.

As he accepted his award for best actor on Sunday, Day-Lewis remarked that “it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln”.

“Somehow it is only so fitting that every now and then an actor tries to bring him back to life again,” he went on.

In the television categories Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey were named best comedy actor and actress for 30 Rock, giving Baldwin his seventh consecutive SAG win.

The prize for best ensemble comedy series cast went to Modern Family.

Jennifer Lawrence was named best actress for Silver Linings Playbook
The TV drama acting prizes were given to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad and Claire Danes for Homeland.

Julianne Moore’s turn as former Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin in Game Change earned her the award for best actress in a movie or miniseries, with Kevin Costner receiving the equivalent best actor honour for Hatfields & McCoys.

Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke, star of Mary Poppins and Diagnosis Murder, was presented with the guild’s life achievement award.

After waiting on stage for a prolonged standing ovation to end, the 87-year-old said: “That does an old man a lot of good.”

Other winners at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday included Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which won the animation category, and Searching for Sugar Man, which took the documentary prize.

Homeland also won the award for best television drama series, while Modern Family was named best comedy series for a third consecutive year.

The British star actor Idris Elba has been confirmed as the host of the Lagos version of D’banj’s Koko Concert. The multiple award-winning singer made the announcement via his official Twitter page.

The Hollywood heartthrob will be bringing dramatic moments to D’banj’s first post-Mo’Hits era concert in Lagos. The concert already has an interesting line up including fellow GOOD Music label mates like Big Sean and Pusha T announced and it will hold on 27 December 2012 at the New Expo Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites Lagos.
D’banj’s last Koko Concert in August at the HMV Apollo, London locked down the British capital and the singer was said to be working hard to replicate that in his home city.
